Key Stage 4:

This course provides you with an insight into the role and work of the Public Services and presents you with opportunities to develop key employability skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication and problem solving. The range and extent of the Public Services might surprise you. When people think about Public Services, they tend to think only about the emergency services or the Armed Services, but they include a much wider range of roles including the Civil Service, the Justice sector and voluntary services. This qualification will help you explore what the Public Services do and how they are funded.

The Level 2 First Award in Public Services has TWO core units:

Unit 1: Role and Work of the Public Services (Exam)

 

Unit 2: Working skills for the Public Services (Coursework)

 

 

You will also be completing TWO other coursework units which are internally assessed and moderated externally:

Unit 3: Employment in the Public Services

 

Unit 4: Public Services and Community Protection

 

 

Homework/Independent Learning:

A large part of this qualification will involve coursework, the expectation is that students will have a very good level in both English and Maths. Students will need to be self-motivated, willing to participate in practical exercises and be able to work as part of a team and also independently.

Careers/Progression:

Level 2 First Award in Public Services provides a good foundation for progression to Level 3 Extended Certificate in Uniformed Protective Services. The content of the Level 3 course ranges from looking at behavioural psychology to teamwork development and criminology and provides an opportunity for further enhancing the employability skills from this Level 2 course.

Extracurricular:

Pupils will have the opportunity to take part in teamwork sessions ran by the RAF to support their learning.

 

Key stage 5:

 

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Uniformed Protective Services

Introductory paragraph:

This course is studied over 2 years and is equivalent to one A-Level. The Uniformed Protective Services sector is diverse and includes the Police Service, Fire & Rescue Service, the Armed Services, Prison and Probation Services. This qualification is ideal for students who want to learn about the Uniformed Protective Services alongside other fields of study with a view to progressing to Further or Higher Education to pursue a course related to UPS or other chosen fields of study including Sociology, Psychology and Criminology. Employers from UPS have been involved in the content and skills required for such careers and this means that students who choose to enter direct employment in this sector will have a realistic understanding of current practice. For each unit the pupil will be awarded a D – Distinction, M – Merit, P – Pass N - Near Pass or Fail.

The Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Uniformed Protective Services has two mandatory units:

Unit 2: external assessment (exam): Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services.

Unit 5: Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Uniformed Protective Services.

 

 

You will also complete TWO additional units selected from a set specification.

Unit 13: Introduction to Criminology.

 

Unit 15: Police powers and the law.

 

 

Homework/Independent Learning:

This course is heavily coursework based and will require students to be self-motivated and be able to work in both a team and independently.
