Maths
The Mathematics Department at St. Columbanus College reflects the aims and objectives of the college, providing a caring and nurturing environment enhancing the teaching and learning of our pupils. We are a dynamic department who strive to get the best out of all the pupils we teach. We embrace the Revised Curriculum incorporating content alongside Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities, Problem Solving, Active Learning and ICT.

Music
Music
Music can help students develop critical thinking, spatial reasoning and cognitive skills. It also helps develop communication skills and encourages creativity and expressiveness. Pupils who play music as part of a group develop team-working skills, self-discipline, self-esteem and the ability to listen to others. The music block is the place where everybody can express themselves in a fun, creative environment.

Modern Languages
Modern Languages
In year 8 and year 9, students have the opportunity to learn French and Spanish. At the end of year 9 pupils choose their preferred language to continue studying in Year 10. Our classrooms are vibrant positive learning environments equipped with Interactive Whiteboards and the most up-to-date foreign language resources. We also subscribe to Linguascope, an interactive language learning website which our students can avail of both in school and at home.

Moving Image Art
Moving Image Arts is an exciting subject which has been running at our school for 13 years. Moving Image is an enjoyable and innovative subject but requires hard work and dedication. In our department we strive for success in a hardworking environment. We place high expectations on all our students and encourage them to develop their own unique style and personality through their film making choices whilst appealing to their areas and genres of interest.

Welcome to St Columbanus' College PE Department. Our primary aim is to educate our students in the importance of health and fitness so that they can make positive life choices. We also aim to develop skills and qualities such as teamwork, leadership and communication, through a wide range of physical and sporting activities. Every student is supported by staff to develop their self-esteem so that they have the confidence to reach their full potential.

Our work within the Religious Education Department is centred upon the needs of the individual child. We strive to work in close partnership with our pupils, parents, colleagues and community to develop the whole person academically, vocationally, physically, morally, spiritually and emotionally. Each pupil will have the opportunity to develop all their talents and skills to the full and in doing so create independent, confident and responsible young adults of the future.

Science
All pupils in the junior school follow a balanced science course. As Science is a practical subject, the class sizes are reduced to ensure that all pupils can safely take an active approach to learning. The Key Stage 3 Science course is based around the 3 disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Pupils also enjoy a wealth of extra-curricular activities. Whether they are improving the school environment through their involvement in the Eco-group or working on STEAM projects for national competitions, there is always a busy team of students enjoying learning Science outside of class time.

Sociology
Sociology is the study of how society is organised and how we experience life. It enables us to understand the structure and dynamics of society and their intricate connections to human behaviour. To study A-Level Sociology you do not need to have a GCSE in the subject. You need to be an enthusiastic, motivated with an inquiring mind.

Technology & Design
In years 8, 9 and 10, pupils are encouraged to learn about electronics, mechanisms, materials, pneumatics and computer control. They are also encouraged to embrace new skills such as computer graphics, soldering, use of bench tools, and the competent use of machinery in a safe working environment.

Vocational Studies
Vocational Studies
The Vocational Department in St. Columbanus' College incorporates two exam boards, Open College Network Northern Ireland and Prince's Trust. The OCN NI Personal Success and Well-Being (QCF) qualifications have been designed to support a balanced curriculum by assisting the learner with effective development in personal, social, health and well-being. The Prince's Trust offers young people the opportunity to achieve a qualification in Personal Development and Employability Skills (PDE) whilst participating in the Achieve programme.
