Art & Design
The Art Department's mission is to provide students with a comprehensive and in-depth study in the visual arts. Students develop an understanding of aesthetics, critical and conceptual thinking, visual literacy and technical expertise in a creative and stimulating learning environment. The art curriculum prepares students to become disciplined and professional artists, art educators, creative problem solvers and critical thinkers equipped for the 21st century.

Business Studies
Business Studies
This course allows you to study the world of business, giving you the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills in a practical learning environment. You will examine the roles and responsibilities of setting up a new business and its financial management. You will also develop key skills, such as analysis and review of key financial statements.

Careers
Careers
Careers Education is a continuous process and an important element of the College curriculum. Through the Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance programme, students work on self-assessment exercises which look at their ability, personality, interests and opportunities. This allows pupils to make informed choices in Years 10,11,12 and 13 to make the transition from leaving school to full-time employment or Further Education.

English is taught to all pupils at KS3.
We strive to make English an enjoyable and rich part of the curriculum through:
- Active lessons which engage all students including visiting writers, speakers and poets.
- Allowing students to influence the choice of texts for study
- Enabling students to raise their literacy standards: reading partnerships, literacy workshops
- Enabling them to develop their confidence in all areas of English: public speaking competitions, writing competitions.
- Enriching all students of every ability with a range of classic and modern literature.

Geography
Geography
Geography develops knowledge, understanding, skills and competences which help students understand the world they live in. Students are taught using a range of active learning strategies. Thus, allowing students of all abilities to access our curriculum and develop their skills for life. Fieldwork is an important component of Geography in St. Columbanus. All year groups participate in a range of fieldwork activities. Year 13 pupils take part in a 3 day residential at Magilligan Field Centre.

Health & Social Care
Health and Social Care is the study of health and well-being. Students learn about the key stages of physical and emotional development and begin to understand the profound influence relationships and life events can have on an individual's health. Students also examine the factors that influence a person's self-concept and how people react to change in their lives.

History
The History Department at St. Columbanus College reflects the aims and objectives of the college, providing a caring and nurturing environment enhancing the teaching and learning of our pupils. We have embraced the Revised Curriculum incorporating content alongside Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities, Literacy, Numeracy and ICT that our young people need today.

Home Economics
Home Economics
Students will learn about the nutritional content of foods and how to meet the specific nutritional and dietary needs of different groups of people. To do this, they modify recipes and plan, prepare and cook meals and dishes that reflect current government nutritional guidelines. They also study how to be an effective consumer in food choices, food safety and managing resources.

ICT
ICT
At Key Stage 3, ICT is delivered in Years 8, 9 and 10. The work is focused on thematic units, such as Healthy Living, Global Awareness and a STEM based project. Pupils develop skills in areas such as web design, spreadsheets, multimedia, database, word processing, email and collaborative tools. This supports the cross-curricular assessment of ICT in other learning areas.
