All Ireland Cross Country Success
On Saturday 11th March the Year 10 girls set of on their All Ireland Cross Country Quest. Having placed 8th in Ireland the girls were looking to replicate or better this achievement. The competition was staged in Mallusk playing fields where two weeks previous the girls had been crowned Ulster champions.
Underfoot conditions were soft but still with plenty of good running on a mild day in Mallusk that provided a perfect backdrop and an excellent test of strength and skill. The girls arrived an hour before their 12:30 start and were very focused on themselves, their warm up and their own race.
As the race started the St Columbanus' girls stay well in contention with the leaders with Megan Briggs, Caitlin Turner and Alisha Turner well up the field. Support form parents and various teachers along the way helped keep that spring in their step as the girls battled the conditions to complete the 2550m course, with Megan finishing 14 and Caitlin and Alisha 20th & 44th. Ella Kerr and Leah Hanna were not far behind that. The top three finishers counted for the team event, and the St Columbanus' contingent on 78 points waited patiently for the result.
The results came back half an hour later and St Columbanus' smashed their previous record with a magnificent 2nd place team finish. The girls were over the moon with their achievement with a few tears of joy shed.
The PE department and the whole school are extremely proud of this amazing bunch of girls who wholeheartedly gave their all for the college. They are wonderful ambassadors for the college.
Also a massive thanks to all of the members of staff who attended the event. Your support was a massive help to the team and greatly appreciated.
